Woman feeding her dog a treat. Dog Day Logo. Teach Your Dog Table Manners The Easy Way!

The holidays are here again!  A time of joy, gratefulness, and food! Quite possibly, your dog’s favorite season.  Hence why we thought this would be a good time to teach your dog table manners the easy way! I mean, we wouldn’t want a rendition of last year when Rufus nearly broke Grandma’s hip while making the 50-yard leap for the turkey dinner you just put on the beautifully set table, right? Maybe this has never happened to you (something to add to your grateful list), but let’s make sure it never does with these easy tips!

To teach your dog table manners, bring on your leadership skills! These include patience, good vibes, confidence, and consistency!  When we lose our patience and yell at our dog we might as well have a neon sign on our forehead that flashes, “I’m not your leader!”  Our dog senses our lack of control and thinks this means that actually, they are clearly the leader. If yelling has seemed to work in the past, they were more than likely just confused and scared of you. Neither of which leads to long-term improvement in their table manners. Therefore, it’s important to approach them as a calm but strong, confident but kind, and patient but consistent leader. This is also when our dog is most ready to please us. So, have some fun with it!

Proper table manners start with teaching effective commands like “leave it”.

1.    Get your dog in a standard sit and stay position.

2.    Take a mini training treat in your hand and relax your arm by your side.

3.    When your dog starts to move toward your hand pull your hand up and, in a calm, but confident manner, say “No, leave it.”

4.    Repeat.

5.    (Enter patience).

6.    Do this until your dog hesitates, even just a millisecond, and immediately reward him with the treat while you say “Good, leave it!” in an excited voice.  By consistently repeating the command you are reinforcing it and associating it with a reward.

7.    Repeat this process gradually, increasing the amount of time he hesitates each time before rewarding him.

Do this at least ten minutes, twice a day for a week or two. Then you can decrease it to once a day.  This is likely to become your favorite command since you can use it in so many ways, besides just table manners. It can even save your dog’s life in some situations!

Lastly, the day your guests arrive carve out time for your pooch to exercise before-hand.  They will be more likely to show off their new table manners when guests arrive if you take them on a new trail or include short sprints of jogging mixed in with the walk!  We here at Dog Day, Every Day! can help make sure your dog is properly stimulated the days preceding the holiday with our fun doggie daycare services.   Just call 513-860-DOGS (3647) or enroll here!  Happy tails!

4 Unique Ways Dogs Make Us Happy

Posted by Dawn Donaldson

Woman holding her pug in the air. Dog Day Every Day Logo. 4 Unique Ways Dogs Make Us Happy

Happiness comes in many forms, but few things make us happy in ways man's best friend does. There are many ways a dog makes us happy, but in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we wanted to take a moment to be thankful for four unique and less obvious ways dogs make us happy.

  1. Dogs help us save money. If we don’t have a dog at home we tend to go out more often.  This can mean dining out more, which leads to spending more money. In contrast, if we have a dog, our outings naturally decrease. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2017 the average American spent $3,365 on dining out and $3,203 on entertainment.   While a dog costs money too, they don’t typically cost over $6,000 a year. So in a way, this means a dog brings us a greater return on our investment in them!
  2. Our dogs channel our inner happiness. Coming home after a stressful day without a dog to greet us makes it harder to destress.  Rather, if we have a happy, full-on tail wagging dog at our feet we can’t help but lighten up as we begin to engage and play with them.  Dogs remind us to bring out our inner child and lighten up a little.  This helps us tap into our creativity too!  It seems creativity and channeling our inner child always equals happiness.
  3. Dogs can teach us healthy lifestyle hacks. By default, dogs keep us exercising because they need to be walked too but I, like so many others, had a situation that forced me to get resourceful so to heal and add five happy years to my dog’s life! Not only did I find a life-saving dog food recipe for her, but I got one that improved my health and cured my allergies as well! Seems like eliminating an allergy ailment can’t help but spell H.A.P.P.Y!
  4. Dogs help us BE in the moment. Have you ever walked your dog in a rush because your to-do list was haunting you and your dog decides he’s going to plop down and take a break in the shade? Furthermore, no matter what you do he’s not budging.  Then you notice how relaxed and happy he looks. Suddenly you realize it’s a beautiful day! Deep breathing ensues, making you notice the floral smells of spring in the air. Before you know it, you’re smiling and thanking your buddy for making you stop and smell the roses.

These are just four ambiguous ways a dog can bring us happiness and in which we can be thankful for, but every dog owner knows there are many more!  Show your dog how thankful you are for him or her by calling 513-860-DOGS (3647) or enrolling them in Dog Day, Every Day!, where they can run freely and play in a happy and safe environment or be treated to a paws-itive spa day!

Simple Tricks To Teach Your New Puppy

Posted by Dawn Donaldson

Puppy high fiving a woman Simple Tricks to Teach Your New Puppy

It is vital to continually challenge your puppy and continue to teach them beyond the basics. We have a few tricks that every puppy should know. We recommend working with your puppy at least a half an hour before you go to work and then when you get home from work. Why is this you might ask? By working with your puppy about an hour a day you can master a few simple tricks to teach your new puppy.

Keeping The Momentum

Guiding and teaching your puppy the basics when you have this much momentum makes so much sense to keep challenging them. So many people make the mistake of trivializing tricks with their puppies, but the basics are sitting down, staying calm, some leash walking that is easy to master. Here at Dog Day Every Day we have added a few other tricks to try to master with your puppy.  Of course, everyone has a smart puppy, so this will be an easy lesson!

Spinning in a Circle

According to Dog Day Every day, a canine’s drive to hunt makes spinning in circles a trick that any puppy can learn. “You can use your puppy’s natural feeling to rely on their nose to find food into luring them to move in all sorts of ways.”

  1. Let your puppy sniff the treat in your hand.
  2. Move your arm in a wide circle around the puppy as you give the cue, “spin.”
  3. Encourage your puppy to follow his nose to spin in a circle and reward them with the treat.
  4. Once your puppy understands this trick, graduate to only using the word “spin” or making a circular hand or arm gesture to elicit the behavior.

Puppy High-Five or Shake Your Hand

Is there anything more adorable than a handshake (or a high-five) from your best pal? This trick requires that your dog already knows “sit”.

  1. Ask your puppy to “sit”.
  2. Gently tickle the back of the leg until the puppy lifts the paw while using commands like “give paw” or “shake.”
  3. Reach for the paw and reward with a treat for carrying out the handshake. The same steps can be applied for a “high-five” command; hide the treat in your fist and try to get your puppy to paw at your hand while using the “give a high-five” prompt, ultimately opening your fist and rewarding your puppy for touching your open palm.

Dog Day, Every Day is devoted to making sure our guests are balanced and healthy through proper mental and physical exercise. We accomplish this by providing a fun, safe and secure atmosphere for them to run and play with their friends. You want the very best for your canine companions and so do we. The Secret Life of Your Pet

Posted by Dawn Donaldson

dog wearing funny glasses that have a nose the secret life of your pet

They watch you leave as you're out the door in the morning and greet you when you come home at the end of the day. But ever wonder what your dog does while you're out of the house? What our canine companions get up to is a bit of a mystery, that's why we wanted to give you an inside look into the daily life of your pet.

A Dog’s Life

No, they don't organize friendly card games while you're away, most of the time dogs’ lives are pretty simple. So what does your dog do when they're home alone? While a dog’s life can be rough, a lot of dogs spend their spare time catching up on rest and sleeping in their favorite spots. Some breeds, such as boston terriers, miniature schnauzers, and larger dogs such as bull mastiffs are well suited for spending several hours on their own.

However, not all dogs are suited for spending time left home alone. While faithful and loving dogs, some breeds, like toy poodles and australian shepherds, are prone to separation anxiety, and anxious behavior can be channeled in negative and destructive ways. Other breeds, like fox terriers, are high energy and if left alone too long can wreak havoc on your home. So, what can you do if you’re looking to avoid having Rover redecorate your living room or “reorganize” your shoes?

Doggy Daycare to the Rescue

While walking your dog before you leave for the day or leaving treats and toys out for them can keep your dog occupied while you’re away, doggy daycare provides you with peace of mind, knowing that your canine companion is being well cared for and staying out of trouble. Experienced caregivers keep an eye on your dog so you don’t have to, and provide them with a wide range of activities, so by the time you bring them home they’re tuckered out and ready to snuggle up with you on the couch. In addition, it provides them with the opportunity to interact with other dogs, helping them to develop strong social skills.
